Let’s talk about one of my favorite subjects: money.
But first- check out this informational and educational video. It’s magic (press “play” to see what I mean.)
The videos from UnSeminar5 are ready.
The digital/down-loadable ones are online. The DVDs are at the fulfillment house.
In the next day or so I’ll put together a sales page… in the meantime, here’s a free preview.
enjoy!
Now, why would I say that “money” is one of my favorite subjects?
It’s simple. I’ve been rich. I’ve been broke. Rich is better.
There is absolutely nothing noble or romantic about living in poverty. It’s not fun or funny.
Now, there’s an amazing world at the top of Maslow’s hierarchy – remember that?

To get to the fun stuff at the top of the pyramid, you have to take care of the necessities at the bottom of the pyramid.
To quote Kinky Friedman, “Money will you buy a fine dog, but only love will make it wag its tail.”
However, if the dog dies of starvation, the tail-wagging becomes strictly academic.
Like I said above, there’s a lot of fun at the top of Maslow’s pyramid- but you have to take care of body and bank account before you play there.
A lot of people deal with the bottom two levels by getting a job. Hopefully, one with benefits.
If you’ve read my book, you know that I think that’s the riskiest solution. And, I wrote that book two years ago (or so)- long before the current economic climate made the subject of “jobs” academic for millions of people who had bought into the dream.
Jobs suck. Bosses suck. I don’t want to get up early, dress in uncomfortable clothes, be at an office at a specific time to do make money for somebody else. I won’t even do all that to make money for myself. But, by definition, if you’ve got a job, you’re creating more than you’re costing- or you’re history. The difference between what you’re paid and the wealth you create for the company is that company’s profit- and I’m all in favor of profit, but this isn’t a charity.
This is your life.
Why would you make yourself miserable, and leave money on the table at the same time?
Oh well. At the time I wrote the book, I could see the risk- but I couldn’t anticipate the massive lay-offs that are happening, and continue to happen. Even if you’re still employed, unless you’re one of those rare people who actually love their job, I want you to start thinking about how it would look, and feel, to sleep in, work at your own pace, and make a LOT more money than most people make from their jobs.

Personal note- thanks for all the kind emails, messages, and calls. The surgery went fine. I’m recovering right on schedule. Physical therapy is a drag, but I’m sticking with it. In a month or so, I should be up and fully operational. In the meantime, I’m either grumpy or stoned on opiates. Stay tuned.

That pyramid thing is always interesting phenom… Often times, if you manage to ’start at the top’, the good effects trickle down through the whole thing and you end up with.. everything. Pretty effortless, compared to climbing the mountain? That’s how I find it, anyway.
I don’t see anything “wrong” with your post, Pat.
In fact, I see a lot of right – and it isn’t the first time either!
One of the most memorable…. the live streaming video of unseminar 5 – which was (to me) an incredibly nice thing to do for your students/colleagues/peers/friends.
Being able to watch -in real time- was the next best thing to being there!
For the many good things you do… Thank You, Pat!

Hi Pat
We’ve discussed this a bit on the forum. As a marketer… I’ve sent only free stuff to my list about once a week in hopes of adding to my list and building a strong relationship… and they still turn me in as a spammer.
It’s hard to know the balance between building a relationship… selling products… and being a pain in the fanny.
I do think this issue brings up an interesting point. There are more and more people doing internet marketing and using e-mail to sell to their list. Perhaps, the e-mail marketing method is getting “soft”?
I know folks like Joe.. who already have huge lists… probably don’t notice declines in their lists as people opt-out. However, it would be interesting to know what his open e-mail percentage is… as of late.
I sometimes get several e-mails a day from one marketer or another. I keep Joe on my list but only open one about one e-mail a month. I open yours… because I know you’re down to earth… and offer something besides “woo woo” land.
I’ve started opting out of lists… To much e-mail clutter… even though they may have great contact.. the over sell has gotten to me.
So as a customer… I get the “upset” as expressed in these comments.
But, those of us who are buildings lists… we better pay attention to the general attitude of our customers and not pass them off as “people who are jealous or complainers.”
As a marketer, I don’t know what the answer is for the future…but I do know we are wearing out our welcome. We need to put our heads together and seriously look at alternatives.

Hi, Pat
Most of what I might say has been said above, but I’d like to add that one thing I have found is that people who respond like that to reasonable and responsible sales offers have a strong inner block on selling and in their own businesses, if they have one, they are often unable to confidently and boldly ask for the order.
In my early days of doing trainings, I met a gal who told me about the problems she was having getting her new business going (mostly, no customers) and how she wanted to be successful. I said “Gee, I know exactly how to fix that and what you should do!” She was thrilled until I told her about the full day training coming up, and that it cost money. Then she cussed me out, told me I was trying to take advantage of her (!) and stomped off. Six months later I saw her and she told me her dream business was shut down. “It just didn’t work out” she said, with no sign that she’d ever put the pieces together about our previous conversation. Sad, eh?

P.S Yes ittttts’ ****ing cold here. :’)
Hi Pat,
I apologize and would like to clean that up with you; that was not a nice
thing to say.
When I first got into Joe’s and the gang’s stuff I was really helped with
some of the personal growth lessons that I learned.
However, there are so many emails coming from Joe and his affiliates that I
don’t even open them anymore.
Anyway, I apologize for the mean comment and wish you all the best.

mail:
You dont have to worry about those emails. There will always be negative
people in this world. Just one mail, from how many prospects in your list?
Take it easy.
Max.
and even more mail:
Hi Pat,
I tried to post this at your blog, but got an error message about
cookies and java, and I just don;t have the patience to try to figure
this out so I am sending this directly to you:
I just got your email about the dilemma of where to go when people
hate you for giving away valuable stuff because you also sell things
for a living.
I have bought some of your products, and I returned one product
because it did not work for me. I have never been given anything but
straight up value for my money, or I got my money back. I can’t ask
for more than that.
I be believe that you are giving away good information because you
are generous, it feels good to you, and also because it creates good
relationships, which becomes good business. That if you give someone
an idea that is a catalyst for making some money, that there is a
good chance that they will spend some of that money on more ideas
from you….
I think some folks just get pissed off at you and other successful
marketers because your having fun and making money and they are not.
I get that way sometimes, but it blows over, and then I get back in
the game.
I think the fact that you are pissing some people off is a good sign.
Maybe they will take that uncomfortable energy and do something with
it besides complain. Like have fun and make some money.
So, my two cents is: keep going where your going, and keep posting
about it. Gives me inspiration!

Hi Pat
Although you are giving away stuff, which is admirable, people these days are bombarded by similar emails, once you have signed up for the free stuff, you then get badgered by emails that I think are “affiliate” selling, quite often the cost of the offer is $97!!
Think people get fed up with this stuuf and think its spam or junk.
I know its good to see and that’s what we are in business for, but I for one am forever getting emails that are to do with the LOA and how this book or that course is the follow up or the turbo version of the content in The Secret!!
Wishing you every success, hope you don’t mind me commenting?

Dear Pat,
I can understand your frustration to the negative comment below.
However, let’s look at the possible reason he wrote those words. This
could be an opportunity to improve your efforts.
Personally, I feel that way (spam) about people who email too often.
Clayton was doing that for awhile. It got to the point I would read
the subject line and hit delete. My Mom always said. “Don’t wear out
your welcome.” How right she was. You want people to see your name and
say, “Oh, good, here’s something from Pat O’Bryan.”
Obviously, Matt R … likes you, because he said, “…it’s sad.” Look
beyond the hurtful words and listen to his message. In fact, write a
personal note to him, thank him for his observation, and ask how you
can fix it. Make a friend.
Warmly,
Pam

who says email is dead, LOL?
Hi Pat
I appreciate your asking my opinion and I have to agree with this person about the spam. It’s not a matter of giving away “free stuff.” It’s matter of giving us a reason to care about what you have to offer.
In my opinion, your breakthrough was the “Portable Empire” concept. I’m most interested in getting more information about how I can make that happen. If you were to focus on that more, and drop the rest (especially the politics) I would be much more interested.
Thanks,

Well Pat in response to your email, I just took a look at your blog.
Sometimes when a person is in a bad frame of mind everything in their life looks like spam.
My guess is Matt was having a very bad day or maybe even a bad weak, who knows.
Don’t take it personally.
I get a lot of email everyday. I don’t always bother to open it all, but I have always opened yours for 2 reasons.
1. Usually I find something of value or
2. I find something entertaining
You have never let me down yet when I have opened your email.
Thanks

Hi Pat
I can understand that you were unhappy w/ the email saying you’re nothing but SPAM. That’s no fun to hear, especially when it isn’t true
It is interesting to me though that that was more visible,I guess, than the email I sent to you saying that I really enjoyed getting your messages + looked forwards to seeing what you were up to next ( I also noted that I seem to be double-noted in your list + asked to be cut down to one copy per message, as my mailbox floweth over)
It’s a pity that the stinkers are more interest catching…
I still like ya’

Oh My GOD!!
I can’t believe it.
I was trying to find a way to tell you how marvelous your last mail was without sounding like a frickin’ groupee.
I love your mail and I love your blog. (Not to mention the Milagro Forum
I have learned more from you than any other person online period.
Keep up the good work and ignore the fools.
